CVS/pharmacy Announces Voluntary Recall of Gold Emblem Brand Candy Containing Peanuts
WOONSOCKET, R.I., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- CVS/pharmacy announced today that it is voluntarily recalling four types of Gold Emblem candy containing peanuts that were sold in its stores from January 1, 2007 to January 29, 2009. The Company was notified by its candy manufacturer that these products contain peanuts from Peanut Corporation of America, which is the focus of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter food products. CVS/pharmacy is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to its Gold Emblem peanut products and it has issued this voluntary recall as a matter of precaution.
The following products are affected by this recall and have been removed from all CVS/pharmacy stores and CVS.com:
-- Gold Emblem Chocolate Peanuts 3.5oz
-- Gold Emblem Bridge Mix 3.5oz
-- Gold Emblem Peanut Clusters 3.5oz
-- Gold Emblem Caramel Clusters 3.5oz

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
CVS/pharmacy and its website, CVS.com, are cooperating with its suppliers and the FDA in the recall of certain food products containing peanut butter and peanuts. Upon notice of an FDA-issued recall, CVS implements its product withdrawal process to remove the affected products from its stores and website. To further protect the health and safety of its customers, a block is placed in our store register system to prevent the sale of these recalled items.
