my standard disclaimer:
the coupons for specific items (like the claritin-d) have been working for anyone in the past. the $/$$ coupons ($5 off $30, etc.) will beep "not for card" if they were not emailed to you. but then again the $/$$ have a tendency to beep "not for card" even if they were emailed to you, because apparently cvs has not perfected their system.

online coupons deal too good to be true

Fake online coupons spark widespread fiasco
By Susan Kelleher
Seattle Times consumer-affairs reporter

Fraudulent coupons for groceries and toiletries are being circulated in an Internet marketing fiasco one industry spokesman predicted would take years and a million dollars to clean up.

The mess, which began as a small marketing experiment on Facebook, has created a backlash from coupon-clippers who say they felt like criminals for trying to redeem coupons for items such as shampoo and Cheez-Its.

The San Jose, Calif., company that created the coupons said it was victimized by computer hackers who tapped into a company database and stole images of coupons the company planned to use in sales pitches to major manufacturers.

Those images, as well as coupons offered through the marketing test, were copied in a form that allows them to be circulated and "clipped" by anyone with e-mail and a printer.

The firm is still grappling with how to deal with the coupons, both the ones it authorized and later suspended, and the ones it said were hacked. Meanwhile, an industry group is scrambling to get the word out to retailers who will have to deal with the coupons at the cash register.

"We've never run into a situation like this before," said Bud Miller, executive director of Coupon Information Corp., a not-for-profit group that works for more than 20 manufacturers to protect them against coupon fraud. "It could be hundreds of thousands of dollars before it's over. Potentially, it could be in the low millions. We won't know until the coupons come in for processing." Miller said the manufacturers he represents did not know coupons were being issued for their products.

The situation began Aug. 15, when Vryl Mkt offered about $10,000 worth of coupons for 12 products through "Check It Out," a commercial application the company developed to test the marketing power of the social-networking site Facebook, according to company president Harry Soza.

People with Facebook accounts could click on the button to download the coupons, as well as recommend them to friends.

Soza said the firm's employees were still congratulating themselves on what he said was a successful test when consumers began contacting them to see if the coupons were real. The company reassured people the coupons were legitimate. Quickly, though, it realized that not only were the coupons being copied and disseminated more widely than it had intended, but that sample coupons the company intended to use only for marketing pitches had been taken from its database and were being circulated as well, Soza said.

In correspondence with the company, one clipper said he heard there are now coupons for up to 40 products floating around.

Within a few days, the company told retailers not to honor any of the coupons, and told consumers: "In order to protect our retailers and all of you responsible coupon users, all coupons will now be considered invalid copies. We are working with all the industry players and word is going out to the retailers not to accept them."

Consumer condemnation was swift and harsh, and within days, a law firm was organizing a class-action suit against Vryl Mkt.

"I really felt like a fool and was quite embarrassed when I was scrutinized for attempting to use these coupons this past Saturday," wrote centsavingma, who posted a complaint on iReport.com. Three store managers came to the register to inspect the coupons, while a man behind her in line complained that his ice cream was melting, she wrote. Eventually, they canceled the transaction.

Another poster wrote that she was "mortified" after making a special trip to Target to use a $6 coupon for Pantene shampoo, only to have the coupon rejected at the register.

Others, however, wrote they had no problem redeeming the coupons, and felt bad that retailers might get stuck with the tab.

Miller's industry group was alerted to the problem more than a week ago, and has worked overtime to get the word out to retailers and the manufacturers whose products are featured on the bogus coupons.

"It's clear, to our knowledge, that there were no security features associated with these coupons," Miller said. "If you're going to do Internet coupons, you should exercise appropriate controls."

The only upside, he said, was the honesty of the coupon clippers who helped expose the problem.

"I think the whole coupon-trading community ought to be commended," he said. "They immediately recognized there was no security associated with these coupons, and starting warning each other."

How the money shakes out is still up in the air. Soza said the company will honor the coupons it authorized that have already been redeemed, but hasn't decided how to address the bogus ones. Miller, and most of the consumers who have commented online, said the company should be held accountable for everything it created.

"There are 40 coupons in wide circulation with no controls," Miller said. "There's a reasonable chance we're going to be dealing with this for a couple of years."

vyrl mkt just keeps digging themselves in deeper

Malyshka of slickdeals called harry soza (co-founder of vyrl mkt) 8/20/08 about his company's facebook coupons. it went a little something like this:

Malyshka :
I am calling to see if any updates are available on the legitimacy of the coupons put out by the check it out program at facebook.

Harry :
We have made a formal statement that the coupons will no longer be validated and encouraged stores to no longer take them. Somebody hacked into our system and changed the value of our coupons and then started selling them to a large group of people. This has cost us thousands, and none of these coupons were meant to go out. We were in fact still working on finetuning the coupons when someone hacked into our system and changed the values. Some coupons were even created by these hackers and were not ours at all.

... People started sharing these coupons with friends when the object of the program was to have them printed off the check it out application.

Malyshka :
I have an email from Leslie Leonetti encouraging me to share the coupons with friends

Harry:
If you look at that date of that email I am sure it will say Saturday. That was our position on Saturday. We have since changed the rules of the promotion and have made offiical statements to that effect. I would urge you to look at all date stamps as the most pertinent information will have today's or yesterday's stamp on it.

Malyshka :
Can you give me an example of coupons that were created by hackers?

Harry:
Well, there are now coupons out there for Fiji water and Pantene and others that we never created. We only created 12 different coupons. Somehow hackers created a bunch more to where we heard there are now up to 40 coupons floating around.

Malyshka :
Can you explain why we would have screenshots of Mark Wayman stating that all coupons are legitimate, including the Fiji water and the Pantene coupons, and that the high values were in fact correct?

Harry:
I was not aware he made that statement. If he did, he misspoke. I am the president of the company and as such will tell you he was incorrect in this. I am sorry, but I have another call that I am obligated to take.....

new statement from vyrlmkt and a nice long rant from me.

mark wayman, of vyrl mkt

statement:
"It is an unfortunate but sad reality; however, in order to protect our retailers and all of you responsible coupon users, all coupons will now be considered invalid copies. We are working with all industry players and word is going out to the retailers to not accept them."
via facebook

and the rant:

thank you vyrl mkt, for protecting responsible coupon-users by informing retailers that the coupons they printed legitimately are fraudulent! that is so noble of you. :)

let's review what i would like to call...

the vyrl mkt scam of '08

8/15/08
the coupons on the "check it out" application for facebook were discovered and spread like wildfire all over the internet. it generated excitement and resulted in lord-knows-how-many installations of the application on facebook. this is what the company was aiming for...viral marketing! what a success!

8/18/08
still, there were doubts... could these coupons really be legit? the values were so high! and printing of coupons was unlimited and sharing with friends was highly encouraged. was the company (vyrl mkt) really going to reimburse the stores for so many coupons?

those who contacted the company and were assured again and again.

Reply from Customer Rep of vyrl mkt

"I assure you the promotions are real. If they were fake we'd lose any potential customers like you and no-one would share the offers with friends which is what we all want. There would be no point for us to have invested all this time and money into building this application if all we did was upset people."

so true... why would they want to upset people? i'm glad they invested so much time and money into this app, surely they are professionals and know what they're doing.

later that day:

the company starts to backpedal...

"Dear Check It Out User,
Thank you for all your excitement and enthusiasm regarding the launch of our facebook application Check It Out!
As you know, we are dedicated to providing amazing deals. Please be aware that someone has hacked into our development database of our coupon offers, placed our offers in pdf files and is now distributing them throughout the internet. The majority of these coupons were not for distribution. They were strictly to be used for sales and marketing demonstrations. Such offers, because they are copies / reproductions, are considered fraudulent and are not permitted, please do not attempt to use them.
All the offers that were properly printed through our facebook application can be redeemed.
ANY copy of any coupon or anything printed or reproduced from any other source other than through the authorized Facebook application may not be accepted at the register."

gasp! somebody "hacked" into their database. hmmm... actually all that needed to be done to find additional coupons was change some of the numbers in the url. i guess you could consider that hacking... but i wouldn't brag about it at def con. and printing them to a pdf file? well, i don't see how you could possibly consider that hacking.

i suppose the company could have used some sort of security measures to prevent printing multiple copies or printing to pdf (as 99% of online coupons have) but how could they have possibly known that people would like getting 5 free frozen pizzas even more than 1 free frozen pizza? could it be that there are greedy people out there on the internet?

still, they are being fair: if you printed a coupon from facebook, the way they were intended to be printed, you are still allowed to use it. if you printed a coupon from someplace else, then it "may not be accepted at the register."

just one problem with that... no matter where you printed the coupon from, it looks exactly the same. so how can a cashier possibly decide which coupons are legit and which are fraudulent?

8/20/08
the company has now decided that all of the coupons they offered are now fraudulent.
"Dear Check It Out User,

Thank for your support and enthusiasm, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Our guiding principle is to help you stretch your household budget as far as possible, particularly in these challenging economic times. Please continue to help us with this goal as we address the current unfortunate situation. As many of you may have heard, our system was breeched resulting in the illegal spreading of fraudulent copies of our coupons via email or PDF. We are extremely saddened by this occurrence and understand the frustration that many of you feel, as we have families and children of our own.

That said, it has been several days since the print limits of our offers were reached. Unfortunately copies of the coupons are still being illegally circulated on the Internet, making it impossible to determine which are legitimate and which are not. Each of our coupons clearly states that "offer void if altered or copied".

Our teams are working diligently to resolve all issues so we can continue bringing you quality offers.

It is an unfortunate but sad reality; however, in order to protect our retailers and all of you responsible coupon users, all coupons will now be considered invalid copies. We are working with all industry players and word is going out to the retailers to not accept them.

The abuse by the few has lead to this decision which sadly affects the many. Despite this setback, the overall result of our initial launch has been overwhelmingly successful. We are currently working with manufacturers and sponsors to bring you a wider range of offers based largely on the products that you told us you wanted to see."

successful?! "The god damn plane has crashed into the mountain!" (from the big lebowski)

how are us couponers going to show our faces at our regular stores after vyrl mkt has informed them that we are criminals? how can they get away with this?

2 hours later:

"Let us state our position more clearly. If you printed a coupon from the application properly, and redeemed it properly and did not use copies or pdf prints, it is our policy to reimburse the store where you used the coupons. That said, it has been several days since the print limits set for the coupons were reached and we believe all coupons now in circulation are the result of invalid pdf prints or copies. Going forward, we are advising the stores not to accept them."

oh good, i'm sure the stores i shopped at will understand that the coupons that are considered fraud today were actually fine for me to use yesterday.

Sherry Hancock writes...
Just because you believe that all coupons now in circulation are now copies does NOT make it TRUE. I legitimately printed out the coupons and have not been to a store to use them yet. Now you claim the exact same coupons in my possession that yesterday you said were legit are now fraudulent. This total backtracking is only leaving a bad taste in my mouth about your whole company and this application. If you think that your application is doing well......think again. You will continue to anger the very people you pretend to cater to. Don't you think it's time you admit your mistake instead of blaming your troubles on the the rest of us?

By the way I still have part of my paycheck left over from Friday also. I doubt my boss will claim that I should have spent it all by now and any money left over as of today must be fraudulent...................do you see how stupid your statement sounds???

okay so maybe we can go back to talking about cvs now? unless any of you have comments about this company? don't hold back, let it all out :)

oh and don't forget to leave your comments on facebook as well...

or you might want to email Harry Soza, co-founder of Vrylmkt,
HSoza@ResolutionHealth.com (email address is invalid)
408-892-2759

or call/write Leslie Leonetti, Director of Business Development
1348 The Alameda, Suite 7-320
San Jose, CA 95126
408-340-7120, ext. 413

more info on the facebook coupons

those of you who got the facebook coupons someplace other than facebook may have received some coupons that were not offically released to the public. please see the list below of coupons which were available on facebook for a limited time.

it would seem that any additional coupons were either acquired though a hack of their development system or leaked from someone working there. i'm not sure if the leaked coupons "work," but out of consideration for the company, i would not suggest using them.

these are the official facebook coupons:

Jetset Energy Mixers

St. Ives Body Lotion

Gillette Series Shaving Gel

Mint Milano Cookies

Vitamin Water

Kellogg's Special K

California Pizza Kitchen

Pantene Pro V

Lean Cuisine

Cranberry Juice Cocktail

Sargento Sliced Provolone

Bagel Bites

Cheez-it Crackers

Orbit Gum

Skintimate Shaving Gel

Hershey's Extra Dark Chocolate

updated 8/19: added these 2 after i found out that they had been available on facebook as well:

Fiji Water

Mach 3

as a sidenote, please do not email me about sending you these coupons. i have been asked by vyrl mkt to remove these coupons from the site and i am aware of their concerns about exceeding print limits, so i will not be distributing them any further.

if you have questions for vyrl mkt, you can contact them here

many people are questioning whether these coupons are just "too good to be true"...

Reply from Customer Rep of vyrlmkt
"I assure you the promotions are real. If they were fake we'd lose any potential customers like you and no-one would share the offers with friends which is what we all want. There would be no point for us to have invested all this time and money into building this application if all we did was upset people.

The deals are amazing at the moment because we as a company are bearing the cost of the discounts so that we can see if you and people like you are really are interested in saving money this way.

Today was amazingly successful and proved that we really can provide a VALUABLE service to people trying to manage increasingly tight budgets in today's hard family times.

We have now proved that we can provide this service and that people are genuinely interested in using our app. so we can now go to the large manufacturers and have them add their coupons to our app. for everyone's benefit. The offers may not be as amazing as the last week or so but they should still be really good."

free cvs suncare w/ printable coupons, week of 7/6 - 7/12

this week cvs suncare is buy one get one 50% off. (prices starting at $1.89.) so you should be able to get 2 free, or close to free, per transaction:

for example
suncare $1.99
suncare $1.00 (50% off)
- $2 off cvs brand skincare
- $1 off cvs brand suncare

ymmv on finding any for $1.89 or $1.99, but as long as they aren't too much more than $2 regular price they'll still come out pretty cheap

poll: does the 4th of july coupon work?

please read answers carefully...

did you get your $4 off $20 4th of july coupon?

apparently some people have been having trouble receiving their emails from cvs. but, if cvs issued this coupon to you, and you did not get your email, you can still access it! (the theory is that this will not work for everyone, only for those who the coupon was issued to, no report yet on whether the coupon "beeps")

follow these instructions:

to get your coupon, you need your mid and cid codes.

So look at any old email from cvs you may have and at the bottom of your email, find the unsubscribe link. right click on that link and select "copy shortcut" or "copy link location." paste it somewhere (like notepad) so you can see the whole address. look for mid=, cid=, and possibly e=. it will look something like this:
e=xxxx@xxxxx.xxx&mid=xxxxxxxxx&cid=xxxxxxxxxxxx
copy that section.

open up one of the coupons that is not for your card. look for that same e=xxxx@xxxxx.xxx&mid=xxxxxxxxx&cid=xxxxxxxxxxxx
section. replace it with your personal info (make sure the e, mid, and cid are in the same order as the coupon that is not for your card.) try your new url

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
if the coupon was issued to your card, it will appear! complete with your name!
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

if it has not been issued to you, you'll just get a page not found message

btw, some people have already used the 4th of july coupon today 7/3, with no problem.

how to print beauty handbook coupons

so everyone has been complaining (and rightfully so) about the ridiculous size of the coupons on beautyhandbook.com so let me explain step by step, how i go about printing them.

there are easier ways, but i do it this way. i like to use pdf because this way you don't lose quality. poor quality can mean the coupon will no longer scan at the register and who wants that hassle?

1) download and install cutepdf writer, its free, useful, and cute!

2) download and install foxit reader its free and seems to run faster than adobe. my version of adobe does not have an "page scaling" print option, so i need to use this. perhaps newer or paid versions of adobe do include this option?

3) go to beautyhandbook.com and click on the coupon you want. when the pop up window opens with the coupon click the print button. if you use ie, try what renee says:

I use IE, so I have this problem with these coupons also. In the 7.0 version, there is now a small printer image right above the webpage you are viewing. It is where your tabs appear. If you click on the down arrow next to the printer, there is an option for PRINT PREVIEW. Click on that and then in the last drop down on the page, reduce the size to 50% and click on the printer icon.

If you don't see the area in the tabs area that I am talking about, you can select PRINT PREVIEW from your File menu at the top of IE.

if you do use internet explorer, why not download firefox? even if you really prefer ie, it never hurts to have another browser to try when something is not working right in the one you are using.

4) near the top of the print options window there is a drop-down menu for the printer you want to use. now that you have installed cutepdf writer, it should be listed as one of your choices. select cutepdf writer and click print.

5) it may take a second... then cutepdf will prompt you to indicate where you want to save the pdf and what you want to call it. so name it and select someplace where you will be able to find it, like your desktop.

6) now open the pdf you just saved (with foxit) resize the window and play with the scrollbars until only the portion of the image you want to print is visible. like this:

(you think i don't hear you laughing at my desktop?)

7) now click print and change the options to
♥ printer name: cutepdf writer
♥ print range: current view
♥ page scaling: 75%
♥ auto center: un-checked
click ok

8) ...cutepdf will prompt you to indicate where you want to save the pdf and what you want to call it. so now you might want to name it blahblah_cropped and again, select someplace where you will be able to find it, like your desktop.

9) now you have a saved pdf of the resized and cropped coupon. you can open it and print without having to mess around with the options again. useful if you want to print more as you need them.

hope this was clear and useful!

p.s. it would be a lot easier if i could just post the resized cropped version, wouldn't it? but that would be illegal. cvs, if you are listening, why don't you tell beautyhandbook.com to fix their craptastic website so that the coupons are a reasonable size?

"i heart cvs" mentioned in article on abc7news.com!

"As founder of the Chilling Effects Clearinghouse, an online resource to help Internet users understand their rights, Seltzer regularly posts cease and desist letters received by Web sites including one recent letter pharmacy chain CVS sent to a Web site called IHeartCVS.com.

The letter claimed IHeartCVS had infringed on intellectual property rights by posting "links to in-store redeemable CVS coupons." The Web site was asked to "destroy any and all unauthorized reproductions of CVS' intellectual property."

"I'd argue that links to pages on CVS' site are not infringements of copyright," Seltzer said."

i agree with seltzer... but i removed those links anyway because i was afraid dreamhost would shut down my site if cvs asked them to. but i still ♥ to bookmark them :)

where have all the coupons gone?

as some of you may know, there were some unreleased (not emailed to anyone yet) cvs coupons found online. and now none of the links work any longer. okay, now they're back!

did cvs pull them because people were using them already? or is this just a technical glitch on their end?
